In 1643, during the Edo period (1603 - 1868), Confucian scholar Hayashi Gaho (1618 – 1688), also known as Hayashi Shunsai, defined the list of the Best Three Views of Japan. The most celebrated scenic sights in the country are Amanohashidate (Kyoto Prefecture), Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Hiroshima Prefecture) on Miyajima, and Matsushima Bay (Miyagi Prefecture).

1. Amanohashidate, Kyoto Prefecture
Amanohashidate also called the bridge to heaven, is rated as one of Japan's three scenic views. The beautiful 3.6 km-long sand bar in Miyazu Bay is covered with 8000 pine trees. On both sides of the sand bar are hills, which offer amazing views over the bay.

2. Itsukushima Shinto Shrine on Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture
The Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto Shrine and UNESCO World Heritage Site on Miyajima, a small island near Hiroshima. The famous torii gate is known all over the world. The island itself has a beautiful forest and parks with free-rooming deer.

3. Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Prefecture
More than 260 islands covered by pines (matsu) and white rocks are located within the beautiful and picturesque Matsushima Bay near the city of Sendai. There are four recommended spots (Matsushima Shidaikan) for the perfect view over the islands, which are Otakamori (Magnificent View), Toyama (Beautiful View), Tamonsan (Grand View), and Ogidani (Enchanting View).
