History
Building No. 2 of the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse complex was constructed in 1911 and Building No. 1 was created in 1914. The renowned Meiji architect Tsumaki Yorinaka (1859 - 1916) was responsible for the project. During the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake parts of the building complex (mainly Building No. 1) were destroyed and the reconstruction took until 1930. After the terrible WW2, the American army took over the complex and used it from 1945 to 1956. Once Japan got the control back the buildings were used again as customs houses until 1989. A large renovation project was completed in March 2002 by the Takenaka Corporation. It received the Good Design Award by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization in 2002. The last renovation happened from May 2022 until December 2022.
